Guest Article: Branding Yourself In The Smash Community

By |April 24, 2014|Default|1 Comment

Hey everyone, HugS here, and I wrote a little piece.

This is for the players that are getting good and are wondering how to get known. This is for the players who feel they are better than some of the game’s biggest names, yet can’t seem to pull in the same kind of notoriety. Building a brand that people associate with can get you more support than your skills ever could alone.
Intro to Branding
While I can’t say I’m the foremost expert on brand building, I can say that I am very much in control of the image I put out there, and it’s all very intentional. I want there to be no confusion about who I am, and what I represent. In fact, it’s almost disgusting how predictable I am. However, that makes my actions a consistent reminder of my brand.

The thing about building your brand is that you can produce both positive and negative perceptions about yourself. Widespread likability is not the point. I don’t care who you are, as long as you’re in the public eye, you’re going to get negative feedback. Is your record completely spotless? Well then, there are people out there who hate cookie cutters too.

So let’s get this straight: the main point about brand building is to generate support from the people who associate with it.

Team Meeting

By |April 21, 2014|Default|26 Comments

Okay Smashers, you’re probably wondering why I’ve asked you here. Well, we need to talk. It’s about doubles.

I have a burning passion for doubles, I really do. But rather than get on a soapbox and try to force that passion on the community, I think it’s time to do the right thing. I think we need to tilt our collective chin in the upward direction, shoulders back, and admit that it’s time to call it quits.

I think we need to abolish doubles tournaments.

C_Naught’s Console Capture Crash Course – Part 1/3

By |April 18, 2014|Default|3 Comments

As we enter a new “platinum-age” of Melee, it’s becoming more and more important to the community to record and stream tournaments, practice sessions, smashfests, and other content than ever before. With the advent of Twitch.tv and the accessibility of streaming software, mixed with the popularity of content creators like VGBootCamp, ClashTournaments, and SaltyPlayground (to name a few), the prospect of creating content is becoming more appealing. The problem is, there’s not a simple how-to guide on how to start.

MIOM| PewPewU: Intro to Hitboxes

By |April 14, 2014|Default|11 Comments

Introduction:
Knowing the ins and outs of your character as a melee pro is not only necessary, but expected. Every character, even if they are duplicates (Fox Falco, Mario Doc, Falcon Ganon) has unique hitboxes that everybody needs to learn. This excerpt isn’t about the specifics of Marth hitboxes, but I will use a few Marth images to analyze the importance of knowing hitboxes because I feel he has a very defined set of hitboxes.

The first thing everybody needs to know is that there are both hitboxes and hurtboxes.

Training: Where Feedback Loops Go Wrong

By |April 10, 2014|Default|0 Comments

Introduction

Lately, I’ve been holding some serious one on one training sessions with some local aspiring players as my way of giving back to the community. The results have been, for the most part, solid with many players noticing great improvement. It has been interesting to observe newer players to get a better understanding of how they make decisions. For example, what’s the rational for a person to always roll onto the stage from the ledge or, perhaps, why a Captain Falcon player would attempt so many Raptor Boosts (Side+B’s). It may be simple to say to a player to simply stop spamming forward smashes with Marth or down smashes with Peach, but I don’t think it’s that easy for people to break a habit.

Why There’s More to Smash Than Game

By |April 9, 2014|Default|0 Comments

Six Ways to Up Your Smash Game and Why There’s More to Smash Than Game,  by Chris Fabiszak

When I went two-and-out at my first tournament, I became obsessed with getting better. I swore to myself I would become a top ten player. I sacrificed my college social life, held no interest in classes, and jeopardized several relationships in the process. When I earned 10th at the end of Major League Gaming’s 2006-2007 season, it felt great. But you know what? I turned around to find no one was watching.

In the meantime, the Smash scene was unable to hit the meager, sub 200 player caps MLG set for the events, and my family and non-Smash friends just saw Smash as the thing that took me away. So while there were impassioned and dedicated players, to be sure, the scene was so fragile that it nearly collapsed when Brawl was released.

Six Ways to Up Your Smash Game

Six Ways to Up Your Smash Game and Why There’s More to Smash Than Game, by Chris Fabiszak

You’ve made the decision: you are going to be the next Smash superstar. Good on you. While the secret recipe for breaking into the top five really can’t be taught, a little discipline and a conscientious training schedule can set you up for success. Here are my top recommendations.

#6 – Play people near your skill level
I see players fight desperately to sit down with the best people they can find. But if you aren’t already placing at tournaments, getting time with Dr. PP won’t do you any good, I promise you that. Instead, find people who are 1-2 steps away from your skill level – up or down. You’ll be able to identify the gaps in your game much easier that way, and you can work on them more attentively when you have a practice partner.
